Michael Jackson 1958 - 2009::..
I had the honor and pleasure to work with Michael Jackson for three months, preparing for his This Is It concerts. It was absolutely the best experience I've ever had in my many years in the music business. He was an absolute joy to be around, and was very sharp and clear about his vision for this series of shows.

As Percussionist Bashiri Johnson noted, "He wanted to make sure every fan got what they paid for - that the singing and dancing were on, and that the instrument sounds were just like the records" The entire production felt this very strongly, and we all worked up to 16-hour days, six or seven days a week, to make his dream a reality.

The musical director, Mike Bearden, is a close friend of mine, and he did an amazing job getting the music together and rehearsing the band to perfection. Normally on a tour of this size, there are several divas or "problem children;' but not here. On every level, this production had the best of the best people. It was going to be an amazing show.

To say it was a shock when Michael passed away is a huge understatement. We'd just had two of the best rehearsals, with all elements of the full production finally coming together, and Michael had never looked or sounded better. He was there all day until 12:30 at night, working with all of the departments to bring his vision to the fans. We were in L.A.'s Staples Center the day he was taken to the hospital. At first, information about his condition was unclear at best, so we kept on working - as he would've wanted. Around 2:30, we got the news that he had passed away, and there wasn't a dry eye in the house. As I write this, it's been two weeks since, and it hurts more every day.

On July 7, Mike Bearden, Kenny Ortega, Ken Ehrlich, and our production team put on the best memorial I've ever had the honor to be part of. It was moving, respectful, and most of all, a celebration of a true musical genius's life. They put the entire show together in a couple of days, and it was spectacular.

I do have to say that I'm beyond disgusted with the news media - especially the Nancy Graces and TMZs of the world. Can't they give us a moment to grieve or celebrate the good that Michael brought into this world? Why do they think we want sensationalist, tabloid headlines - true or not? It's appalling. Please let them know how you feel about this brand of "journalism" by not watching or supporting them in any way!

Please honor Michael Jackson by remembering the amazing music he created and the good works he did for the many charities he supported. When anyone says something bad about him, remind them of this in the most direct way possible. We owe that much to Michael and his family. Personally, I'm grieving the loss of an amazing talent and a friend I will miss always. I'm a better person for having known him.

We'll miss you, Michael!
